Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells. People with sickle cell disease have red blood cells that contain mostly hemoglobin* S, an abnormal type of hemoglobin. Sometimes these red blood cells become sickle-shaped (crescent shaped) and have difficulty passing through small blood vessels. When sickle-shaped cells block small blood vessels, less blood can reach that part of the body. Tissues that do not receive normal blood flow eventually become damaged. This is what causes the complications of sickle cell disease. There is currently no universal cure for sickle cell disease.
THESE GENES is a sickle-cell project which seeks to create awareness about the disorder through events, publications and appearances. JEANS FOR GENES is an awareness based event, but money will be raised at the event to help a lady living with sickle-cell and currently suffering complications from an operation, with her hospital bills.
While the organizers have not released a formal list of participants, they have indicated that houses like TONI PAYNE, OUCH, and 5VE, and artistes like LOOSE KAYNON, SKUKI, WILLY BANG, DIPP, and LAMI, have already stated their commitment to the event!
